Damen Rowell is a devoted father, a man of unwavering faith, and a living testament to transformation. Born and raised in Danville, IL, Damen once faced the harsh realities of gang life, addiction, and incarceration. But over 14 years ago, he made a courageous decision to change his life—entering rehab, embracing recovery, and committing himself fully to spiritual growth and community service.
Today, Damen is the founder of New Beginnings Outreach, where he helps individuals battling addiction reclaim their lives and restore their dignity. Known affectionately as a "street preacher," Damen meets people where they are—in the streets, shelters, and struggling neighborhoods—offering not only encouragement, but direct connections to recovery programs across Illinois and beyond. He partners with organizations like CU at Home, Jesus House, the Salvation Army, and many others to open doors to healing and restoration.
His grassroots outreach includes organizing toiletry drives, clothing giveaways, Thanksgiving and winter meals, barbecues, and, for the past three years, an Annual Community Health Fair in collaboration with Carle, Public Health, the Housing Authority, and other vital partners. This event provides health screenings, recovery resources, clothing, and meals to over 200 people annually—many of whom are taking their first steps toward a better future.
Damen Rowell’s life and work exemplify the very essence of community unity—breaking down barriers, lifting up the most vulnerable, and reminding us all that with compassion and persistence, real change is possible. He is Unapologetically Us, and we are proud to honor him with the Community Unity Award.
